On page 345 of the 3rd edition, it states re: First-Time Seizure “If presented with a

non-focal (partial) first-time seizure in a child who is greater than 1 year of age and otherwise healthy, no further workup is indicated as long as the seizure was less than 5 minutes.”

Then on the following page (346) under Seizure Terminology it states:

PARTIAL SEIZURE: It’s focal in location.

 

I’m sorry, I’m confused: Is a Partial Seizure Focal or Non-Focal… thus to NOT do a work-up in an otherwise healthy child over 1 year with a seizure lasting less than 5 minutes: we are looking for a focal or generalized seizure? Can you explain this a little more?

I believe you ALWAYS work up the focal ones.

Hopefully someone else will jump in soon.
