Thanks for always being so willing to answer questions!

On page 328 of the 3rd edition of the PBR it states that for VUR, “once diagnosed, patients should be given antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent UTIs (use amoxicillin or trimethoprim).”  However, I thought the newest guidelines were NOT to use antibiotic prophylaxis as recent studies show it does not prevent the occurrence of UTIs…

]]> http://forum.pediatricsboardreview.com/forums/topic/vur-and-antibiotics/#post-438 <![CDATA[Reply To: VUR and Antibiotics]]> http://forum.pediatricsboardreview.com/forums/topic/vur-and-antibiotics/#post-438 Wed, 20 Mar 2013 01:47:22 +0000 bdig I’ll take this one.  I don’t think the Board will nitpick over this one.  There is a tremendous amount of debate on this topic.  Though the AAP recently published a new CPG (on evaluation of VUR), some children’s hospitals are refuting the new guideline.  Similarly, many urologists still prescribe prophylactic antibiotics.  Because the topic is hot and changing, I seriously doubt the Board will nitpick.  My advice would be to follow the material as posted in the guide.
