This is my question:  If the animal a person was bitten by is a pet, the study guide says the animal can be observed and HRIG is not given; does the patient still get the rabies vaccine ?

My understanding  for rabies guidelines for postexposure  from healthy and available pet observe for 10 days only no prophylaxis unless bite or exposure is to head or neck or animal develops signs of rabies. (Reason is that once person is bitten it takes 10 days for virus to reach brain and if  bitten on face it’s closer to brain) If animal behaves normally during the 10 days , no vaccine.   mamadoc414@aol.com
